Jim Carrey's cult classic "The Cable Guy" have reason to celebrate as a brand-new 4K restoration of the film has its world premiere today at the 2026 Tribeca Festival.
Originally released in 1996, The Cable Guy stars Jim Carrey as the eccentric and increasingly obsessive cable installer Chip Douglas, who forms an unwanted friendship with Steven Kovacs, played by Matthew Broderick. Directed by Ben Stiller, the dark comedy has grown into a beloved cult favorite over the past three decades.
Tribeca Festival proudly present the world premiere of the new 4K restoration today Friday, June 12, at 2:00 PM at New York City's SVA Theatre. The screening is part of the festival's special retrospective program celebrating the film's 30th anniversary.
The official synopsis reads:
"It's a time-honored urban ritual: Slip the cable guy $50 and you'll get all the movie channels for free. But when Steven Kovacs (Matthew Broderick) moves into a new apartment, he finds his cable guy (Jim Carrey) is not like the others. He doesn't want Steven's 50 bucks; all he wants is a friend—and he won't take no for an answer. Steven is about to learn there's no such thing as free cable."
Following the screening, festival attendees is treated to a special conversation featuring director Ben Stiller and star Matthew Broderick, moderated by Leah Wyar, President of People Inc. Jim Carrey will not participate in the event.
The premiere marks the first public screening of the newly restored version and is expected to fuel anticipation for a potential future 4K UHD home video release. While no official release date has been announced, the Tribeca screening confirms that a new restoration of the film has been completed.
The Cable Guy remains one of the most unique entries in Jim Carrey's filmography, showcasing a darker and more unconventional performance that has earned growing appreciation from audiences and critics alike.

Meanwhile, Hulu's upcoming Cable Guy comedy-drama pilot is set to begin filming in Vancouver this July, starring Jake Johnson and Damon Wayans Jr. Inspired by the 1996 cult classic, the series will reimagine the story for the modern streaming age. Jim Carrey is not involved in the project.
The 2026 Tribeca Festival runs from June 3 through June 14 in New York City.
